William "Bill" Haines
Windham, NY: William Michael Haines, 58, died on February 24, 2010 at Albany Medical Center. He was born on September 19, 1951, the son of Leonard and Marie Haines in Stamford. He is survived by his wife Gail (nee Welch), his sons Peter and Martin, grandson Chase, his mother Marie, his brothers Ron, Leonard Jr., Patrick and his sisters Pam Tilp and Tracy Tilearcio. Bill was a plumber and was currently working at the Lowe’s Home Center in Catskill. He was an avid historian and loved the mountaintop. Services were held at the Decker Funeral Home in Windham on February 28. Interment will take place at West Kill Cemetery in the spring. Hillard Hommel, retired superintendent of Twilight Park in Haines Falls, died Thursday, March 4, 2010 in St. Peters Hospital in Albany. He was a lifetime resident of Haines Falls. Born on April 7, 1927, his parents were Arthur and Lillian (Brower) Hommel. He married Justine (Legg) Hommel on June 11, 1944.
He worked as a carpenter until 1969 when he became the superintendent of Twilight Park, where he acted in that position until his retirement in 1998. His life there was challenging but satisfying, and provided him with years of happy memories. After his retirement, he enjoyed working with wood in his workshop. He always enjoyed trips he and his wife took in the United States and Canada.
Hillard was active in the community. He was a co-founder of the “People in Haines Falls”, an organization that focused on the effort of improving the appearance of Haines Falls. He was a member of the Kaaterskill United Methodist Church and served in several positions on the Board and was a Lay Speaker. He was a charter member of the Haines Falls Fire Company, where he was an active member and was the Fire Chief in the 1960s. He was honored as Grand Marshall of the 2009 Greene County Firemen’s Convention.
Family survivors are his wife, Justine, and sons Artie and wife Patti and Nathan and wife, Sherry. He was predeceased by son, Mark, and two brothers, Charles and Scott. He is also survived by his brother, Francis, (Harm) Hommel of Winter Haven, FL and a sister, Barbara and three grandsons, Mark, Jason and Zachary, and many nephews and nieces and grand nephews and nieces.
Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church in Haines Falls on Wednesday, March 10th. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Kaaterskill United Methodist Church, the Haines Falls Fire Company, or the Tannersville Rescue Squad.
Janet Haines Janet Carole Haines, 78 years, died September 28, 2010, Safety Harbor, Florida. Born in Toledo, Ohio, and a resident of Safety Harbor since 1996, Jan married her precious Joe on March 31, 1951. She retired after 26 years of secretarial service from the Toledo Board of Education system. She was preceded in death by her parents James and Annalie Sheahan of Toledo, OH, and brother James P. Sheahan of Midland, MI.
She is survived by her husband Joseph G. Haines, Sr.; sons Joseph, Jr., (Christina) Haines, Maumee, OH; James E. (Ann) Haines, Toledo, OH; daughters Catherine M. (Robert) Poiry, Rossford, OH; Monica L. Yager, Clearwater, FL; Veronica S. (William) Posnak, Clearwater, FL, and Teresa R. (Richard) Ackerman, Paradise, MI; devoted sisters Joanne (DeWayne) Hehl, Safety Harbor, FL; Marjorie Garwacki, Toledo, OH, and sister-in-law Jan Sheahan, Midland, MI. Also surviving are 24 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
A viewing was held at Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home, 2853 Sunset Point Road, Clearwater, FL, on Sunday October 3rd. A funeral mass was held at Espiritu Santo Catholic Church, Safety Harbor, on Monday October 4th. In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations to Espiritu Santo Church choir or to Suncoast Hospice, Clearwater, Florida.
